Zoonotic infectious diseases such as influenza continue to pose a grave threat to human health. However, the factors that mediate the emergence of RNA viruses such as influenza[thinsp]A virus (IAV) are still incompletely understood. Phylogenetic inference is crucial to reconstructing the origins and tracing the flow of IAV within and between hosts. Here we show that explicitly allowing IAV host lineages to have independent rates of molecular evolution is necessary for reliable phylogenetic inference of IAV and that methods that do not do so, including /`relaxed/’ molecular clock models, can be positively misleading. A phylogenomic analysis using a host-specific local clock model recovers extremely consistent evolutionary histories across all genomic segments and demonstrates that the equine H7N7 lineage is a sister clade to strains from birds[mdash]as well as those from humans, swine and the equine H3N8 lineage[mdash]sharing an ancestor with them in the mid to late 1800s. Moreover, major western and eastern hemisphere avian influenza lineages inferred for each gene coalesce in the late 1800s. On the basis of these phylogenies and the synchrony of these key nodes, we infer that the internal genes of avian influenza virus (AIV) underwent a global selective sweep beginning in the late 1800s, a process that continued throughout the twentieth century and up to the present. The resulting western hemispheric AIV lineage subsequently contributed most of the genomic segments to the 1918 pandemic virus and, independently, the 1963 equine H3N8 panzootic lineage. This approach provides a clear resolution of evolutionary patterns and processes in IAV, including the flow of viral genes and genomes within and between host lineages.

Clean Energy Can Provide Jobs And Security

A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says the renewable energy industry is responsible for 615,000 jobs in the United States. That’s hundreds of thousands of Americans working to provide this country with clean energy from wind, sun and plants. It’s the military vet in Kansas putting her hydraulics knowledge to work in her new job servicing 300-foot-tall wind turbines. It’s the former glass maker in Toledo, Ohio, who’s now manufacturing solar panels. It’s the farmer who’s got a new buyer in the biofuel plant just across the county line. It’s engineers and managers and truckers and technicians in nearly every state in the nation.

Renewable energy development is making a difference in this country, bringing sorely needed jobs and revenue to communities, while protecting clean air and clean water. Clean, renewable energy is working for us. That’s why so many Americans, from all political stripes, want to see more of it.

A recent national poll found that voters preferred investing in clean energy and efficiency over traditional fossil fuel energy by a margin of nearly 2-to-1. In Kansas, arecent poll found overwhelming support for clean, renewable energy and the government policies that encourage its growth. Roughly three-quarters of Republicans and Independents, and 82 percent of Democrats, support the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, which requires that utilities generate 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. In fact, two-thirds of voters said they would support increasing the state’s standard to 25 percent. Nine out of ten poll respondents believed that using renewable energy is the right thing to do for the future of Kansas and the country.

Communities in Kansas are not alone in reaping the benefits of clean, renewable energy. According to preliminary analysis from Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), more than 78,600 clean energy and clean transportation jobs were announced across the country in 2013. Over the past two years combined, E2 has tracked announcements that could create more than 186,500 jobs.

Federal tax policies–such as the production tax credit (PTC) for wind energy, as well as energy efficiency tax incentives for buildings, equipment and appliances— are saving money and creating tens of thousands of jobs while also reducing dangerous carbon pollution that causes climate change and health problems. Congress allowed clean energy tax credits to expire last year: it needs to renew them.

In addition to creating thousands of jobs in the wind energy industry alone, clean energy tax credits save billions of dollars for taxpayers by helping make our homes, schools and office buildings more efficient, and making everyday appliances and equipment use less energy. Energy efficiency, of course, is the cleanest energy of all—there’s nothing cleaner than the energy we don’t use—and it drives job growth as well. In Ohio, for example, utility efficiency efforts alone have created 3,800 jobs , and are expected to create 32,000 jobs by 2025. Federal energy efficiency standards for appliances have generated 340,000 jobs as of 2010, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.

Clean energy is one of those issues that we can all rally around. We all want to breathe clean air and drink clean water. We all want to keep the lights on. We’d all like to avoid a future of more frequent, costly extreme weather, from crippling snowstorms in the South, and exhausting drought in the West, to dangerous hurricanes in the East and deadly floods in the Midwest. And we want a strong economy with good jobs, too.

Americans are looking to clean renewable energy because it provides so many of the solutions people are looking for—jobs, environmental protection, reliability, security. With the right policies in place to support the growth of renewable energy, we can continue to move toward a future of 100 percent clean energy.

Single-cell technologies for monitoring immune systems : Nature Immunology

The complex heterogeneity of cells, and their interconnectedness with each other, are major challenges to identifying clinically relevant measurements that reflect the state and capability of the immune system. Highly multiplexed, single-cell technologies may be critical for identifying correlates of disease or immunological interventions as well as for elucidating the underlying mechanisms of immunity. Here we review limitations of bulk measurements and explore advances in single-cell technologies that overcome these problems by expanding the depth and breadth of functional and phenotypic analysis in space and time. The geometric increases in complexity of data make formidable hurdles for exploring, analyzing and presenting results. We summarize recent approaches to making such computations tractable and discuss challenges for integrating heterogeneous data obtained using these single-cell technologies.

It was songwriter Billy Bragg who opined, “This isn’t a court of justice, son, this is a court of law.” And so it goes that in penalty-kick shootouts, justice doesn’t always prevail with the better team on the day winning. But in the aftermath of Italy’s 4-2 shootout victory over England after extra time finished scoreless, there can be no disputing the fact the better footballing side emerged triumphant.

The more adaptive team won, as well. After a frenetic opening 15 minutes during which both sides created good chances, the defensive responsibilities in the center of Italy’s midfield looked to be a bit too much for creative hub Andrea Pirlo. So Italy manager Cesare Prandelli made the simplest of adjustments, sliding Daniele De Rossi more alongside Pirlo, and allowing Claudio Marchisio and Riccardo Montolivo to take on more advanced roles. This had the effect of providing another outlet to link defense to attack and rendered useless the efforts of England forward Danny Welbeck to shadow Pirlo.

The result was almost complete and utter domination thereafter. Sure, England threatened occasionally on set pieces, and looked a bit livelier after the second-half introduction of forward Andy Carroll, but it was Italy that owned the ball and created the better scoring opportunities. In fact, once the Azzurri began setting up shop in England’s half, De Rossi even found some opportunities to get forward and had a glorious chance to put Italy on top in the 48^th minute, somehow contriving to shoot wide from all of six yards out. Earlier De Rossi had come agonizingly close to scoring as well, but his audacious effort in the third minute from 30 yards hit the post.

10 years later, looking back at how 'Minority Report' predicted the future

In the late 90s, when faced with the task of turning Philip K. Dick's The Minority Report into a feature film, director Steven Spielberg assembled a crack team of forward-thinking minds to envision the technology-saturated world to come. The resulting film was an action movie, through and through. But much of what its various collaborators came up with quickly became hauntingly prophetic. From gesture-based computing to police drones to the overwhelming proliferation of personalized advertising, Spielberg's film, in many ways, describes a future that seems to be rapidly closing in on us.

On the occasion of the film's 10th anniversary, Wired recently spoke to a dozen of Spielberg's former soothsayers about how these and other concepts discussed during the film's "idea summit" transitioned from speculation to reality. Among them: Jaron Lanier, virtual reality pioneer and a key figure in the development of Microsoft's Kinect, Whole Earth Catalog creator Stewart Brand, and noted futurist Peter Schwartz, who also consulted on notable science fiction films like WarGames.

"We would ask questions: What about advertising? What about transportation? What about newspapers? What about food?" Schwartz recalls. "I don’t think many of us knew what the fuck we were getting ourselves into," says Joel Garreau, at the time a reporter for theWashington Post. L'ultima scena vede Danny, Linus e Rusty che seguono all'aeroporto in TV lo show di Oprah Winfrey, con ospite Benedict che spiega il perché della sua (involontaria) donazione. I tre si salutano con un "Ci vediamo quando ci vediamo" e Rusty lascia su una slot machine dell'aeroporto una moneta truccata al tizio che doveva esaminare l'albergo e che era distrutto dopo aver passato i giorni più terribili della sua vita. L'uomo usa la moneta e riceve un "Alì Babà" da 11 milioni di dollari.

Il mio nuovo Ubuntu Karmic Koala

Salve a tutti, dopo tanto aspettare finalmente è uscito il nuovo ubuntu 9.10.
Ho aspettato come si fa di solito un mesetto e mezzo prima di fare l'aggiornamento dalla versione precedente in modo hce venissero risolti possibili bugs, poi il grande passo!
Tutto sembra andato a buon fine e il computer è notevolmente più veloce, vuoi per l'ottimizzazione del kernel per l'ext4 vuoi per la gestione migliorata della grafica e della memoria che permettono di vedere 3.96 Gb rispetto ai 3.8 Gb della versione precedente.
Insomma è uno spettacolo lavorare con questa nuova versione!!!

Salve a tutti, finalmente Thunderbird ha ripreso a volare alto.....
Ho testato il nuovo thunderbird, nome in codice: SHREDDER ed anche se alla versione beta direi che si è comportato molto bene.



La cosa ch mi ha stupito di più è la facilità con cui sono riuscito ad importare il mio account exchange che con la versione di prima (la 2) era di una difficoltà che mi ha fatto desistere.

Ora tutto è di una semplicità davvero disarmante:



basta inserire i dati richiesti e il programma fa tutto, cerca il server exchange, il pop e smtp e le porte che sono aperte...firewall permettendo si intende e poi via, si inserisce la pass ed il gioco è fatto...

SEMPLICEMENTE STRATOSFERICO!!!!!

Patrick Wayne Swayze (Houston, 18 agosto 1952 – Los Angeles, 14 settembre 2009) è stato un attore, cantante e ballerino statunitense.

Diventò celebre grazie alle sue interpretazioni in film quali Dirty Dancing - Balli proibiti (1987), per il quale scrisse e compose la canzone She's Like the Wind, Il duro del Road House (1989), Ghost - Fantasma (1990), Point Break - Punto di rottura (1991)




A Wong Foo, grazie di tutto! Julie Newmar (1995), Black Dog (1998) e Donnie Darko (2001). È stato anche famoso per la mini-serie televisiva Nord e Sud.

A me piace ricordarlo con una frase di Jennifer Grey:"Patrick era una rara combinazione di mascolinita' e di armonia, era un cow-boy dal cuore tenero" e lui stesso durante la sua malattia diceva:"Continuo a sognare un futuro, un futuro con una vita lunga e in salute. Non voglio vivere nell'ombra del cancro, ma nella luce" e "La vittoria per me è non mollare, non importa cosa mi piove addosso, posso farcela, posso continuare".



Ma più di tutte ci ha fatto sognare con la sua frase più famosa: “Nessuno può mettere Baby in un angolo!” e forse molte fans che - adolescenti negli anni Ottanta e Novanta - e non solo in quegli anni, hanno sognato di almeno una volta nella vita di essere Baby. E di non essere lasciate in un angolo...
